The Power Systems Laboratory carries out research, education and technology transfer activities in the field of modern power and energy systems.
Research activities address the planning, operation, monitoring and digitalisation of electrical networks, with particular attention to smart distribution grids, renewable and distributed energy resources, flexibility, resilience, electrical measurements, energy storage, electric mobility and local energy systems.
The Laboratory combines modelling, simulation, optimisation and data-driven methodologies with experimental activities and collaborates with universities, research organisations, system operators and industrial partners at national and international level.
Smart Distribution Networks and Planning
Planning and operation of active distribution networks with high penetration of distributed and renewable energy resources.
Flexibility and Hosting Capacity
Assessment and exploitation of flexibility from distributed generation, demand, storage systems and electric vehicles, including probabilistic and risk-based approaches.
Resilience and Reliability
Methods and tools for assessing and improving power-system resilience against critical and high-impact events.
Microgrids and Local Energy Systems
Planning and operation of microgrids, energy communities and multi-energy systems, including storage and hydrogen-based solutions.
Electric Mobility and Sector Integration
Impact of electric mobility on distribution networks, smart charging, infrastructure planning and integration with other energy vectors.
Decision Support and Techno-economic Assessment
Cost-benefit, multi-criteria and decision-support methodologies for smart-grid planning and investment assessment.
The Power Systems Laboratory is part of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DIEE) of the University of Cagliari and brings together faculty members, researchers, technologists, PhD students and research fellows working in the field of electrical power and energy systems.
The group combines complementary expertise in power system planning and operation, smart grids, distributed energy resources, flexibility, resilience and energy transition.
